The Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) currently has an exciting leadership opportunity for an Associate Medical Officer of Health (AMOH) to join a dynamic leadership team. The MLHU is a progressive public health agency providing a wide range of programs and services to people who live in London and Middlesex County. The MLHU, in partnership with individuals, families, the community and partner agencies, works to promote and protect health and to prevent disease. The MLHU is committed to the provision of culturally safe services, cultivating equitable and productive relationships with Indigenous partners, addressing racially-based health inequities by disrupting colonial practices within and outside the organization, and by building an organizational culture of humility and accountability through ongoing learning, thoughtful policy, and practice that is informed by multiple evidence sources. The MLHU is governed by an autonomous Board of Health and has strong community and inter-agency partnerships across the region.

Position / Responsibilities / Requirements

Reporting to the Medical Officer of Health, the Associate Medical Officer of Health plays a critical role in meeting the Health Unit’s mandate for protecting and promoting the health of the people in the region. The current portfolio includes strategic leadership in public health sciences, including population health assessment and program planning, as well as medical consultation for communicable disease and environmental health activities. The portfolio can potentially be adjusted to your interests. The Associate Medical Officer of Health participates as a member of a committed and collegial Senior Leadership Team in the formulation and implementation of policy and strategic priorities for the Health Unit, and represents the Health Unit with peers and community groups, media, agencies, institutions, and professional bodies.

As an outstanding public health professional, you will have a passion for creating healthy communities and a commitment to a community-centred approach to health equity and to addressing the social determinants of health. As a medical expert, you will provide comprehensive and consistent technical guidance in health protection and disease prevention. As a systems thinker, you will bring an understanding of how local public health is contributing to the work of the communities served and how this then feeds into the broader public health system. As the AMOH, you will demonstrate cultural competencies to enable you to work effectively with a range of community partners, including Indigenous, rural, and urban leaders, organizations, and populations.

Position Profile

The successful applicant must be licensed to practice medicine by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario and hold a Fellowship in Public Health and Preventive Medicine from The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Post-graduate training in community health/epidemiology at a master’s level will be considered an asset. The successful applicant will also have a proven track record of progressive management experience in a range of public health areas, including administrative responsibility and demonstrated proficiency in senior management competencies, including strategic thinking, leadership, risk management, and fiscal accountability.
