The City of Markham is Canada’s high-tech capital and one of the most diverse communities in Ontario, enjoying a rich heritage, outstanding community planning and services, and a vibrant local economy.

The City is recruiting a dynamic, high energy, seasoned municipal leader with strong political acumen, exceptional interpersonal and trust building skills to be their Treasurer. The ideal candidate should also have a proven ability to build and support collaborative teams as well as foster strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Position / Responsibilities / Requirements

The Treasurer is responsible for providing corporate leadership, strategic direction, and guidance and support to City departments. The Treasurer also ensures that Departmental programs and services are able to respond to the strategic fiscal priorities, objectives, and initiatives of the City both on a short and long-term basis; providing strategic advice to the CAO and Council on matters affecting the City’s financial outlook, in accordance with requirements of the Municipal Act and other relevant legislation, and corporate policies and procedures. As the Treasurer, you are constantly seeking opportunities to innovate, modernize and transform the business to meet future expectations.

You possess a University Degree and a Professional CPA designation, (CA preferred) and additional AMCTO certification is an asset. You have a minimum of 8- 10 years’ municipal experience in senior leadership roles within a complex environment, with demonstrated experience in long-term, multi-year financial planning and budgeting.

You also possess a solid understanding and experience in the areas of corporate finance, business analysis and transformational leadership. Strategic problem solving and decision making experience is a requirement. You are a strategic business advisor with solid analytical skills with the ability to distill and present complex financial information and reports to CAO and Council. Proven performance in building and maintaining effective relationships amongst senior leaders, Council and other municipal stakeholders. Demonstrated and prior experience dealing with provincial and federal stakeholders is a must. In support of the City’s Diversity Action Plan and Eliminating Anti- Black Racism Plan, the Treasurer should have demonstrated experience in ensuring diversity and inclusion are a priority and embedded as part of everyday business.
