The Town of Perth is a community of 6,500 sitting along the Tay River in beautiful Eastern Ontario less than an hour from the Nation’s Capital. With a distinct Canadian town atmosphere, expanding post-secondary presence, and growing tourism economy, Perth is one of Ontario’s most attractive and well-known towns. Perth’s collection of historic limestone buildings and its focus on maintaining the heritage character of the community attracts visitors and an increasing number of residents from Ottawa, Kingston, Toronto and many areas in between. Offering the amenities of a community many times its actual size, Perth is a lively and exciting place in Ontario’s economically growing Eastern Regions.

Position / Responsibilities / Requirements

The Town is recruiting an experienced planner with strong political acumen and communication skills to be a Manager of Planning and Economic Development. Reporting to the Director of Development Services, the Manager of Planning and Economic Development is generally responsible for responding to public inquiries and working with other municipal staff, public agencies, citizens, and developers in the review and processing of planning applications. This position is additionally responsible for some key aspects of the Economic Development portfolio, particularly as they relate to planning and development.

You possess a University Degree in a related field (though Planning is preferred) and have at least at least 3 years of experience in land use planning whether in the municipal/broader public sector or in the private sector. Membership in the Ontario Professional Planning Institute (OPPI) is required and being a Registered Professional Planner (RPP), or ability to obtain, is considered an asset. Thorough knowledge of Zoning By-Laws, Official Plans, the Planning Act, as well as other applicable Legislation, Acts, regulations, and local government functions and responsibilities is essential for this role.

Excellent oral and written communication skills are necessary and the ideal candidate should have prior experience dealing with either community groups, Councils or Boards, and other external agencies. Prior Economic Development experience is considered an asset.
