Public Health Sudbury & Districts (PHSD) is a progressive public health agency committed to improving health and reducing social inequities in health through evidence-informed practice. With a head office in Greater Sudbury and five offices throughout Greater Sudbury and the districts of Sudbury and Manitoulin, PHSD has over 250 staff who deliver provincially legislated public health programs and services. PHSD works locally with individuals, families, the community and partner agencies to promote and protect health and to prevent disease. Public health programs and services are geared toward people of all ages and are delivered in a variety of settings including workplaces, day care and educational settings, homes, health care settings and community spaces. PHSD is governed by an autonomous Board of Health and has strong community and inter-agency partnerships, for example, with the Northern Ontario School of Medicine and Laurentian University. PHSD has an enriched public health practice environment that fosters research, ongoing education, and the development of innovative programs and services.

Position / Responsibilities / Requirements

The Medical Officer of Health and the leadership team are looking for an outstanding public health professional with a passion for creating healthy communities and a commitment to a community-centred approach to health equity and to addressing the social determinants of health. You will be someone who has expertise in working with communities to enable meaningful and sustainable changes to advance racial equity, health equity and mental health. As a systems thinker, you will bring an understanding of how local public health is contributing to the work of the communities served and how this then feeds into the broader public health system. As AMOH you will demonstrate cultural competencies to enable you to work effectively with Indigenous leaders, organizations and populations, both urban and rural, and understand rural and Indigenous issues and respect Indigenous culture. Reporting directly to the Medical Officer of Health and working closely with a dynamic leadership team and dedicated staff, you will help to foster a diverse and respectful work environment and reflect PHSD’s values of trust, respect and humility.

Position Profile

The successful applicant must be licensed to practice medicine by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario and have post-graduate training in community health/epidemiology at a master’s level. A Fellowship in Public Health and Preventive Medicine from The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or equivalent is preferred. The successful applicant will also have a proven track record of leading transformational change and working collaboratively with other health disciplines and community-based service providers and additional experience in financial management, labour relations, strategic planning and program development.
