Organization Overview / Background

The Newmarket Public Library (NPL) is currently seeking a highly engaged, robust leader to not only ensure all strategic library objectives are developed, met, and delivered, but that the library is on a progressive path during and after the current pandemic, and its challenges.

The successful candidate will not only drive the active evolution of the library systems, but will motivate, inspire, and mentor the teams for which they are responsible. As well, maintain and foster community and lateral relationships that currently exist and/or will be developed in the future. Maintaining a collaborative and highly productive work environment.
Position / Responsibilities / Requirements

The CEO would lead a complement of 20 full time staff and generally around 50 part-time staff and have the opportunity to contribute to one of the most dynamic, diverse and livable communities in Canada. We are looking for a CEO who can guide the organization through the challenges of today with a focus on the future while enhancing the symbiotic relationship with the Town of Newmarket. Newmarket Public Library supports a diverse community, and the ideal candidate would be well versed in the area of diverse and inclusive practices.

The library's role:  Inspiring the growth of an engaged and informed Newmarket as the centre of community dialogue, debate and discovery in dynamic and welcoming physical and virtual environments.

The CEO would be responsible for the direction and general management of the Newmarket Public Library System.
Position Profile

Ideal Candidate

  • Minimum of 8-10 years progressive Senior Leadership experience within public libraries/ broader public sector/ private sector industry segments.
  • MLIS designation would be an ideal, however a combination of experience and education would be considered.
  • Proven track record of working with Board members, elected officials and effectively managing the interface between the senior management teams, Board, and other key stakeholders.
  • Transformational leadership experience is a must.
  • Proven experience working within unionized environment.
  • Prior experience in guiding the development and implementation of a strategic plan.
