Organization Overview / Background

Lead two newly integrated community organizations with a shared purpose to build community capacity through the delivery of patient and client-centred primary health care, with an emphasis on people experiencing barriers to access and vulnerable refugee newcomers to the Waterloo region.

The Kitchener Downtown Community Health Centre (KDCHC) is an interdisciplinary primary health care centre dedicated to working with diverse cultural groups, people who are homeless, newcomers and refugees, youth, seniors, and others with a focus on the downtown area of Kitchener. KDCHC serves a wide range of clients and specifically with clients who experience barriers to access, be they economic, educational, related to sexual orientation or gender, language, mental health and substance use. KDCHC is a not-for-profit organization primarily funded by Ontario Health West. It has a community-based volunteer Board of Directors that is responsible for oversight of the whole organization. CHC staff are all salaried, including physicians. KDCHC has the most complex client population being served in primary health care in the Region. Having a hub of services supports both clients and providers to serve the people rostered with KDCHC, including clients coming from outreach services in the Downtown core. The team works in a collaborative manner across disciplines and with community partners and community services to provide client centred and integrated care.

Sanctuary Refugee Health Centre (SRHC) is a health centre for refugees in Kitchener striving to offer patient-centred, evidence-based care in providing health to vulnerable refugee newcomers in the Waterloo region. Through an integration with Kitchener Downtown Community Health Centre, SRHC continues to serve the refugee community in the Waterloo region with more sustainable funding to ensure that no refugee is required to pay for services and all refugees have access to more integrated programs and services. Since its inception in 2013 serving a very small number of refugees, SRHC has continued to grow every year and now serves nearly 6,000 patients representing 84 countries of origin and 55 different first languages.

The CEO will report to a Board of Directors, lead a strong leadership team and inspire and motivate a dedicated team of directors, managers and interprofessional staff committed to providing excellent patient and client-centred care.  The CEO will continue the work building a strong integration between KDCHC and SRHC and support the priorities and work of the KW4 Ontario Health Team and the Inner City Health Alliance. The CEO will be an inspirational and visionary leader committed to service excellence, health equity and social justice and be a champion for healthy communities.
