Position / Responsibilities

Reporting to the Deputy City Manager of the Community Development Department, this position provides the leadership and oversight to direct the activities and operation of the Planning Services Division by aligning divisional policies, procedures and work plans with the corporate strategic plan.

The Chief Planner works with citizens, developers, regulatory authorities, consultants and all levels of government to achieve the community’s goal of building a vibrant and growing City. Prepares and presents the division’s operating and capital budget, and ensures adherence to the approved budget. Creates and provides a work place environment which fosters continuous improvement.
As part of the fast-growing Waterloo Region, the Province of Ontario has identified Cambridge, situated on the banks of the Grand and Speed Rivers, as an area of growth and intensification. The Chief Planner will play a key role in reinforcing the city as a North American hub as we continue to develop our three unique and vibrant urban centres (Preston, Hespeler, and Galt) at the western end of the Innovation Corridor.

As a city builder, the Chief Planner will be at the forefront of shaping continued transformation in Cambridge while preserving our heritage assets.

Candidate Requirements

The ideal candidate will have skilled delegation and leadership abilities, can communicate in plain language along with the ability to provide solutions oriented outcomes.  A University Degree in Planning, Geography or related field along with a Registered Professional Planner Designation is required. The candidate will also need a minimum of seven to ten years’ experience in Development and Long-Range Planning along with a minimum of five to seven years’ experience in some leadership capacity.
