Position / Responsibilities / Requirements

About The Role

Reporting to the Deputy City Manager of the Community Development Department, you will provide leadership and oversight to direct the activities and operations of the Planning Services Division by aligning divisional policies, procedures, and work plans with the corporate strategic plan; You will work with citizens, developers, regulatory authorities, consultants, and all levels of government to achieve the community’s goal of building a vibrant and growing city.

As a leader, you will prepare and present the division’s operating budget, ensure adherence to the approved budget as well as create and provide a workplace environment which fosters continuous improvement.

As part of the fast-growing Waterloo Region, The Province of Ontario has identified Cambridge, situated on the banks of the Grand and Speed Rivers, as an area of growth and intensification. As a Chief Planner/ Director of Planning Services, you will play a pivotal role reinforcing the city as North American Hub as we continue to develop our three unique and vibrant urban centres (Preston, Hespeler and Galt) at the western end of the Innovation Corridor.

Position Profile

Our ideal candidate for Chief Planner/ Director of Planning Services has a University Degree in Planning, Geography, or related field along with a Registered Professional Planner Designation. You have a minimum of seven to ten years experience in Development and Long-Range Planning along with a minimum of five to seven years experience in a supervisory capacity. Strong conflict resolution skills and planning leadership experience in a community that has an ideal balance between heritage and development is a must.

As a future city builder and a Chief Planner, you will be at the forefront of shaping continued transformation in Cambridge while preparing the community to welcome a Light Rail Transit System in 2028.
